Project administration and technical support

GAINN4MOS is aimed at improving the network of coastal motorways in six EU member states (Spain, France, Croatia, Italy, Portugal and Slovenia by carrying out engineering studies on newly built ships and/or naval retrofits, LNG port infrastructure, bunkering stations, as well as a large number of pilot projects.

The GAINN4MOS consortium will prepare 21 basic and detailed engineering studies on the LNG bunkering stations and on the newbuild ships and naval retrofits. It will also test an LNG ropax ship and LNG bunkering stations at the Italian ports of La Spezia, Civitavecchia and Venice, and the French port of Nantes-St Nazaire and Fos-Marseilles.

Objectives

  • To provide the initial pilot infrastructure at the core ports of La Spezia, Civitavecchia, Venice, and fully-operational LNG break-bulking stations at the French ports of Fos-Marseilles and Nantes-St Nazaire
  • To generate the initial demand for the Italian LNG bunkering infrastructure, by constructing a new ropax ship
  • To promote greener, safer and more sustainable marine transport by cutting the operating costs associated with fuel consumption by an average of 30%, thanks to the building of a prototype ship
  • To reduce, by an average of 20%, the externalities of greenhouse gas emissions, and the externalities of sulphur emissions by around 80%, by building the prototype ship
  • To contribute to developing LNG, the marine industry and shipyards in the European Union
  • To contribute to the development of the LNG industry in EU ports
  • To share the results of the project with at least 30 EU ports and 20 sea carriers who will not be taking part in this proposal directly

    Attività

    • 1. Basic prototype and pilot engineering projects

      Elaboration of basic engineering designs for 4 new or reconditioned LNG ships, and basic engineering studies for LNG infrastructure and/or bunkering stations at 12 ports (Koper, Nantes-St Nazaire, Fos-Marseilles, Rijeka, Genoa, La Spezia, Livorno, Augusta, Ancona, Ravenna, Civitavecchia and Venice).

      2. Detailed engineering studies and prototyping

      Preparation of detailed engineering studies for 3 LNG ships in Italy (cruise liner, ropax ship and ropax ferry), and detailed engineering studies on LNG infrastructure, fuel stations and/or bunkering stations at the ports of Nantes-St Nazaire, Fos-Marseilles and La Spezia. The activity will also involve the prototyping of a newly built LNG ropax ferry in Italy, and LNG and/or bunkering stations at the ports of La Spezia, Civitavecchia and Venice.

    • 3. Realistic tests

      Validation of the prototypes from various perspectives: technical, regulatory, environmental, training-related and safety procedures, socio-economic and financial. The activity will involve tests, under real conditions, of the prototypes built in the previous phase.

      4. Real-life testing of the two LNG break-bulking stations

      Construction and real-life testing for the two LNG break-bulking stations in France, Nantes-St Nazaire and Fos-Marseilles.

      5. Communication and coordination

      This activity involves administrative and technical coordination, communication and provision of information about the action, which will be necessary for as long as it is in progress.
